Severe wildfires devastated large tracts of land in Sicily and Sardinia on Sunday; in the hinterland of Agrigento, the flames destroyed around 250 hectares of state forest and Mediterranean maquis.
The firefighting efforts began with the blaze in the hinterland of Agrigento in Sicily, where, according to several sources, approximately 250 hectares of state forest and maquis vegetation were destroyed. The columns of smoke were visible across large parts of the province and also disrupted traffic on country roads.
Situation in Sicily
In Sicily, the operations added up to more than 100 individual missions involving civil protection, fire brigade and forestry authorities working together, according to official figures. The authorities coordinated the aerial firefighting operations with firefighting aircraft and helicopters from several provinces.
