Severe wildfires shook parts of southern Europe on Sunday: Near the Greek city of Thessaloniki, a recycling plant and a textile factory were ablaze, while in southern France more than 580 firefighters fought a fire in the Pyrénées-Orientales department.

Situation in Greece

In Greece, a recycling plant and a textile factory near Thessaloniki caught fire. As seen in footage from broadcaster ERT, thick smoke rose from the recycling plant and enveloped large parts of Thessaloniki. A strong smell of burnt plastic permeated the entire city.

According to a fire service member, the factories involved are a recycling plant and a textile factory. As the Greek news agency ANA reported, firefighting aircraft battled the flames above two factories near Oreokastro, a municipality on the northwestern outskirts of Greece's second-largest city.
