Serena Williams' doubles comeback at the Queen's Club in London ended after one match when her 19-year-old partner Victoria Mboko retired injured from her singles tie, forcing the pair out of the doubles quarterfinal.

Williams, 44, had stepped back onto a tennis court on Tuesday evening for the first time in four years, pairing with Canada's Victoria Mboko in the doubles draw at the pre-Wimbledon grass-court event. The former world number one showed she had lost none of her competitive instinct, teaming with Mboko — a player 25 years her junior — to upset the third-seeded pair Nicole Melichar-Martinez of the United States and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the first round.
