Wimbledon Quarterfinal: Zverev Faces His Nemesis Fritz

Awaiting him in the quarterfinals is now Taylor Fritz. The 28-year-old world number seven had prevailed on Monday after a strong performance in just 1:38 hours of playing time, winning 7:6 (7:1), 6:4, 6:3 against the Kazakh Alexander Bublik. Following his unexpected first-round exit at the French Open, Fritz presented himself in brilliant form on grass, reaching the finals in Stuttgart and Halle in the run-up to Wimbledon.

Fritz in Strong Form

The head-to-head record between the two players clearly favors the American: Fritz has won all of the most recent seven direct encounters against Zverev. Zverev last prevailed in the 2024 Rome quarterfinals; seven consecutive defeats against the one-year-younger world number seven followed. German national team coach Michael Kohlmann analyzed the opponent's strengths to the German Press Agency: "A, er serviert sehr gut. B, er returniert sehr gut. Kohlmann and Belz Analyze the Situation

Zverev Bets on More Power

On court, the Hamburg native also announced that he would play with more aggression: "Wenn ich die Vorhand nicht 76 Meilen pro Stunde schlage, sondern mit 84 Meilen pro Stunde schlage, der Aufschlag mit 133 Meilen pro Stunde kommt, die Rückhand mit 80 Meilen pro Stunde, werde ich das Match gewinnen." Among the previous seven defeats against Fritz were also the 2024 Wimbledon round of 16 and most recently the semifinal in Halle/Westfalen.

The season has not always gone smoothly for Zverev: Most recently in Halle in Westphalia, the 29-year-old Hamburg native had problems with his diabetes condition; two years ago at Wimbledon, he was injured in the knee. Nevertheless, he is now in the quarterfinals of the world's most important grass-court tournament and has a chance to reach the semifinals. The match against Fritz is scheduled for Wednesday after 2:00 pm German time and will be broadcast live by Prime Video.
