Scale of the evacuations

The magnitude of the evacuations is triggering one of the largest displacement events Nevada has experienced in recent years. Many of those affected sought shelter in emergency accommodations, with relatives, or in hotels.

Even before the outbreak of the fires, the region had been struggling with extreme heat and prolonged dryness. Such conditions favor the rapid spread of fires and pose additional problems for emergency services.

Weather situation and fire behavior

Casinos and hotels in Reno, which normally attract tourists, reported disruptions caused by smoke and reduced visibility. According to local media, road closures also occurred on the roads around the city.

Authorities urged residents to follow the instructions of emergency personnel and to prepare for further evacuations. Emergency call services and rescue workers said they were operating around the clock.

Pete Bryant and Joe Lombardo, both named as representatives of regional and state authorities, addressed the public on Saturday with updated situation reports and pointed to the urgency.

In parallel to the fires in Nevada, firefighters are currently also battling a major blaze in Spain, in which authorities said around 1,000 people had to be evacuated.

International comparison

Weather services warned that conditions could deteriorate further at short notice. Gusty winds and very low humidity were expected in the coming days.

The exact damage figures and the number of destroyed buildings were not initially known. Authorities announced that a comprehensive assessment would be presented once the situation had initially stabilized.
