A major wildfire on the border between California and Nevada has already destroyed tens of thousands of hectares, according to the responsible Cal Fire wildfire authority and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and a 47-year-old woman was arrested near the fire area on suspicion of arson.

The flames have been raging for days in a mountainous, difficult-to-access region along the California-Nevada state line. Cal Fire spoke of an "extreme fire danger" and cited the ongoing drought, high temperatures and strong winds, which have made containment considerably more difficult. Firefighters are battling the spread with ground crews, water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, according to reports.
