Several years ago, the global community agreed to restore around one billion hectares of degraded ecosystems by 2030.
The target represents a major step for conservation. Around one billion hectares are to be restored by 2030. This is roughly one-quarter of the global target area.
For comparison: the area of around 2.2 million square kilometers is slightly larger than Greenland. It therefore marks the scale of nature that is to be recovered through restoration.

Degraded ecosystems are at the center of these efforts. These include marine and coastal ecosystems, whose restoration is being discussed as part of a broader/global approach.
Nevertheless, implementation is likely to be challenging. There is not much time left before 2030 to plan projects, secure areas and organize work in the affected regions.
