Montreal, October 31, 2026
With an agreement reached at the UN conference in Montreal, member states made progress on international species protection on October 30, 2026.
The conference in Montreal ended on October 30, 2026, with an agreement on protecting biodiversity. As early as 2022, a biodiversity agreement had been concluded with the participation of nearly 200 states. The latest agreement builds on this international framework.
Before the final agreement, the negotiations were difficult. Member states held differing positions on key questions of financing and implementation. Agreements therefore had to be reached over several negotiating rounds.
Starting point of the negotiations
A major point of contention was environmentally harmful subsidies. Particularly controversial was how far subsidies for fossil fuels should be reduced. Member states held differing political and economic interests on this issue.
