Los Angeles, June 13, 2026

The US national team has won the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles, defeating Paraguay 4-1 (3-0), while FIFA President Gianni Infantino caused diplomatic trouble with a sarcastic remark about Italy's missing the World Cup once again.

Historic Start for the USA

In front of 70,000 spectators at the stadium in Inglewood near Los Angeles, the US side celebrated a historic start late on Friday evening (local time). Double goalscorer Folarin Balogun (31st and 90+5th minute) and Giovanni Reyna (90+8th) scored following an own goal by Damian Bobadilla (7th) for the hosts. For Paraguay, Mauricio (73rd) managed only a consolation goal. The victory is the largest World Cup result a US team has ever achieved in a single match.
