World War II Explosives Found Again at Nussensee Near Bad Ischl

At the end of July, the bomb disposal service of the Austrian Armed Forces and the police had already searched the shoreline area and an adjacent hiking trail there for relics from World War II. At that time, explosive devices were also discovered and properly rendered harmless. The new find shows that the body of water and its surroundings must continue to be systematically monitored.

Second Search Within a Few Weeks

Many people lived in the immediate vicinity of the lake during World War II, and the region was an important location during the Nazi era. Weapons were stored and transported during this period, which is why remnants can keep surfacing. The Nussensee itself is regarded by locals as a popular local recreation area with designated hiking spots and bathing areas.

The authorities emphasize that the finds are not a sign of any acute threat to residents and tourists. Rather, they are legacies of the past that are discovered during routine inspections and removed by the bomb disposal service. However, citizens are asked not to touch suspicious objects on the shore or in the water and to notify the police immediately instead.

Authorities to Continue Clearance Work in the Coming Weeks

According to the emergency services, the defusal operation proceeded as planned. The recovered explosive devices were transported away by the bomb disposal service and detonated in a controlled manner at a secured location. The cordoned-off area at the lake was subsequently reopened. Hikers and bathers were once again able to use the popular excursion destination at Nussensee.

The Bezirkshauptmannschaft Gmunden announced that the search and clearance work at Nussensee would continue in the coming weeks. Further shoreline sections and the hiking trail are to be systematically examined with specialized equipment. The goal is to completely remove all remnants of warfare dating from World War II so that the local recreation area remains safe in the long term.

Remnants of Warfare Are an Issue Throughout Austria

In other parts of Austria as well, munitions and explosives from World War II are repeatedly found. Particularly in Tyrol and in the Alpine foothills, bomb disposal services regularly clear relics such as grenades, mines, or duds. The experts point out that many of these objects are still functional despite their age and can detonate when moved or heated.

For the town of Bad Ischl, the Nussensee is an important part of the tourist offering. The find and the subsequent security measures led to short-term restrictions, but in the long term, the municipality and authorities do not see the recreation area as being at risk. They are relying on public education and close cooperation with the bomb disposal service in order to protect visitors.

Residents reported that although the renewed closure at the lake had briefly caused some uncertainty, the rapid response of the emergency services was perceived positively. The police and the bomb disposal service expressed satisfaction with the course of the operation. For the coming bathing season, the authorities do not expect any further major restrictions, provided no new finds are made.
