Young Styrian dies in rear-end collision on A2 near Graz

The 22-year-old was unable to brake his vehicle in time and crashed into the rear of the stationary truck. Despite immediate rescue measures, the man from the southeastern Styria district succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The A2 in the direction of Vienna had to be closed for the duration of the recovery and investigation work. Traffic was diverted locally, causing significant disruption to the early commuter traffic. It was not until late morning that the South Motorway could be fully reopened.

Police Investigations

Police confirmed that there were no further accidents in the incident. A police spokesperson stated to the media verbatim: „Zu weiteren Unfällen kam es laut Polizei nicht." The danger of secondary collisions caused by the stationary truck therefore evidently did not materialise.

Initial investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. At the centre of the inquiry is the question of why the 22-year-old failed to recognise the stationary truck in time. According to police, particular focus is being placed on a possible microsleep as well as inappropriate speed given the poor visibility conditions during the morning hours.

The Graz Public Prosecutor's Office ordered an autopsy of the body to establish the exact cause of death beyond doubt. A traffic engineering expert was commissioned to reconstruct the course of the accident.

Reactions and Consequences

The deceased's relatives were cared for by a crisis intervention team. Police requested that the family's privacy be respected and that people refrain from speculation on social media.

The incident is a reminder of the particular danger of rear-end collisions on Austria's motorways, particularly on heavily used routes such as the A2 between the Graz and Vienna metropolitan areas. Traffic psychologists point out that even brief lapses in attention at high speed can lead to fatal collisions.

Attention was also drawn to the importance of appropriate speed and sufficient following distance. The Austrian Automobile Club had recently warned of the increased risks posed by broken-down trucks on expressways.

Investigations by the Styrian State Traffic Department and the Graz Public Prosecutor's Office are ongoing. Any potential criminal consequences for the drivers involved can only be decided once the investigations have been completed, according to the executive.

The tragic accident near Raaba-Grambach is part of a series of similar incidents on the South Motorway. Earlier this spring, there had been a fatal rear-end collision involving two cars on the A2 in the Graz-Umgebung district.
