Elderly driver dies in head-on collision with truck on B78 in Styria

The exact circumstances that led the 83-year-old's car to veer across the centre line remain under investigation. Police have not yet disclosed whether weather conditions, a medical episode behind the wheel or another factor played a role in the crash.

Investigation and road closure

The B78 was closed in both directions for several hours after the accident to allow rescue work and the subsequent recovery of the wreckage. Traffic was diverted through the surrounding road network while investigators documented the scene.

The Murtal district, which stretches from Judenburg through Knittelfeld toward the upper Mur valley, has been the site of several serious road accidents in recent years. Local authorities have repeatedly called for safety upgrades on sections of the B78, including passing lanes and improved barriers.

Officials from the Styrian police traffic division confirmed they are appealing for witnesses who may have been travelling on the B78 in the vicinity of Obdach around the time of the crash. Drivers in the area at midday on Wednesday are asked to contact the local police station.

Wider road-safety debate

A vehicle recovery service removed both the passenger car and the articulated lorry from the roadway. Firefighters from the Obdach volunteer brigade assisted with first response and the securing of the accident site before the road could be reopened.

The identity of the deceased has not been released by police. The Murtal district command is preparing the file for the public prosecutor's office in Leoben, which will examine whether any criminal or traffic offences may be connected to the collision.

The accident once again drew attention to questions about fitness-to-drive assessments for older motorists in Austria. Road-safety advocates have long argued that regular medical checks for drivers above a certain age could help reduce the number of fatal incidents on rural roads.

Police are expected to publish a preliminary report on the cause of the crash within the coming days. Until then, the section of the B78 near Obdach has fully reopened to traffic.
