Zelensky warns of the impact of the US elections on Ukraine’s air defense

Talks in Geneva and Abu Dhabi

In the US-Russia-Ukraine trilateral format, the most recent talks were held in Geneva in February, following two rounds in Abu Dhabi.

According to available information, the talks produced no tangible policy progress. The countries nevertheless made no concrete progress.

As a result, the previous rounds of negotiations have yielded no immediately verifiable outcomes. Zelensky’s comments also make clear that he views international attention as a possible impediment to support for Ukraine.

What Zelensky fears

The US elections are at the center of his warning. His focus is thus on a possible short-term clash of interests between coverage of the US election campaign and attention to the war in Ukraine.

At the center of Ukraine’s security efforts are air defense and the availability of Patriot missiles. Zelensky says in his statement that these difficulties would go unnoticed during the election.

The statement is a political warning, not a concrete announcement about the outcome of the election or new military assistance. It merely emphasizes that international attention to Ukraine could decline during this period.

The message follows the failed trilateral talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine. Following the most recent negotiations in Geneva, there has been no concrete progress despite several rounds of discussions.
