13-year-old falls into mountain stream in Reichraminger Hintergebirge and is injured

According to the mountain rescue service, the youth fell several meters into the depths. In doing so, he sustained injuries whose exact severity was initially not publicly quantified. First responders were alerted via the satellite function of a mobile phone.

The Mountain Rescue Großraming dispatched several rescue personnel to the accident site. At the same time, the rescue helicopter was requested in order to provide the injured person with medical care as quickly as possible.

Members of the Mountain Rescue Großraming, forces from the Red Cross, and the crew of the rescue helicopter were involved in the rescue operation. The helpers secured the 13-year-old in the rugged terrain and prepared him for transport.

Rescue and transport

After initial treatment at the accident site, the 13-year-old was picked up by the rescue helicopter and flown to the Klinikum Steyr. There, he will continue to receive medical care.

The exact circumstances of the fall are still the subject of investigations. It remains unclear whether the 13-year-old was traveling on his own or whether he was accompanied by adults. There are also no conclusive details yet regarding the exact route on the via ferrata.

Investigations and background

The Reichraminger Hintergebirge is one of the demanding hiking and climbing areas in the Kalkalpen National Park and is popular primarily among experienced mountaineers. However, steep rock passages, exposed paths, and water-filled gullies place special demands on surefootedness and equipment.

Parents and accompanying persons are regularly reminded by the mountain rescue service to closely accompany children and adolescents in alpine terrain and to tailor the tours to their level of experience. Attention is also drawn to bringing complete equipment and to monitoring weather developments.

The police have launched investigations into the cause of the accident. Further information is expected to be released in the coming days.
