Accident location and sequence of events
According to police, the accident occurred at the Spullerplatte climbing garden, a well-known rock face in Kleinwalsertal south of Oberstdorf. The 18-year-old fell uncontrollably to the ground while climbing and was rescued with serious injuries.
Normally, belaying the lead climber is the job of the so-called second climber at the lower end of the rope. They are supposed to keep the rope reasonably taut so that the person in front does not fall into the depths in the event of a mistake.
