At around 10:30 p.m., the arriving emergency crews were already met with meter-high flames and dense clouds of smoke, as incident commander Senior Fire Inspector Peter Hartensteiner described in the report of the Knittelfeld regional fire department association: "Schon während der Anfahrt schlugen uns meterhohe Flammen und dichte Rauchschwaden entgegen." The flames had already spread massively by that point, prompting the fire department to immediately request reinforcements.
