26-year-old hiker from Saxony, missing since May, found dead in Bernese Alps

Background of the Search Operation

Approximately one month after the missing person report, on Monday evening, a personal item belonging to the woman was found in Lake Brienz. This discovery triggered renewed search efforts in the area. On Tuesday, rescue teams were able to secure the mortal remains in Louwigraben near Oberried am Brienzersee.

The Bern Cantonal Police stated that, according to current findings, everything points to an accident. Further investigations into the exact cause of death and the course of events are ongoing. The identity of the deceased has been confirmed by the authorities.

Studies and Engagement in Magdeburg

At the Magdeburg University Hospital, where the 26-year-old was enrolled, the news caused dismay. Fellow students and university groups in which the student had been involved for years expressed their condolences. The university itself did not initially comment publicly on the case.

In addition to police forces, mountain rescuers and other emergency services were deployed during the search operations. The region around Lake Brienz and the Bernese Oberland is one of Switzerland's most popular hiking areas, but it is considered challenging due to partly steep and alpine trails.

Investigation into the Course of Events

According to people close to her, the woman had been involved in various university organizations at the Magdeburg University Hospital in recent years. In Chemnitz, her hometown in Saxony, she was also missed by acquaintances and friends.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Bern is involved in the case. Investigators are examining whether the woman strayed from the planned hiking trail or if other circumstances led to the accident. According to police information, there were no initial indications of third-party fault.

The police asked hikers who were in the Harderkulm–Augstmatthorn area in early May and may have made observations to contact the investigators. The Bern Cantonal Police announced that they will continue the investigations and release further information in due course.
