On Monday afternoon, a 53-year-old Austrian mountaineer fell about eight meters deep into a snow-covered crevasse on the Marzellferner while descending from the summit of the Hintere Schwärze in the Ötztal Alps and was able to be rescued uninjured shortly afterward.
According to police, the two mountaineers were descending from the summit of the Hintere Schwärze on Monday and traversing the Marzellferner as a well-equipped two-person rope team. At an altitude of approximately 3,177 meters, the 53-year-old crossed a snow-covered crevasse when the snow bridge beneath him gave way and the mountaineer fell about eight meters into the depths.
According to police, his 51-year-old rope partner was able to arrest the fall with the rope and placed an emergency call immediately afterward. The alerted rescue teams then made their way to the accident site in the municipality of Sölden in Tyrol.
