The pedestrian and cycle path in Schwendau runs along the edge of the Zillertal in the district of Schwaz. At night, the route was unlit, which made the search for the victim more difficult. According to her own statements, the companion was only able to locate the man with the help of the stopped motorist and the alerted rescue services.

The Mayrhofen mountain rescue service is regularly deployed in the region and was also on the scene within a short time in this case. According to the rescue teams, the process – from the alert by the female driver to the recovery – went smoothly.

The police appealed in this context to pedestrians and cyclists to stay on lit paths during the evening and night hours and to keep a sufficient distance from steep embankments. Especially in mountainous regions like the Zillertal, leaving the path can quickly lead to a serious emergency.

The incident is part of a series of accidents in which hikers and pedestrians have had accidents in Tyrol's alpine terrain. The authorities pointed out that especially at dusk and at night, visibility conditions on unlit paths are severely restricted.
