Operation under difficult conditions

Mountain rescue and the rescue helicopter were alerted simultaneously with the accident and deployed to the difficult-to-access alpine terrain. Despite the rapid response, only the death of the victim could be confirmed at the scene. The relatives were subsequently informed by the police and received support from the crisis intervention team.

As police further reported, the accident occurred around midday on a designated trail in high alpine terrain. According to current findings, the man was alone or in a small group on his way toward the Mörchnerscharte when he lost his footing on the rocky section. The exact circumstances, in particular whether external factors such as wet conditions, rockfall, or a health issue played a role, are part of the ongoing investigation.

Risky route in high mountains

The Mörchnerscharte connects the Floitengrund valley with the rear Zillertal and is regarded by mountain hikers as a demanding, partly pathless passage that requires surefootedness and alpine experience. The affected trail leads over coarse block terrain and exposed rock bands, which is why the route is considered not advisable for inexperienced mountaineers. The weather in the Zillertal Alps can also change rapidly at higher altitudes and significantly impair the grip of the rock.

The Schwaz district, in which Mayrhofen is located, regularly records mountaineering emergencies during the summer months, ranging from minor sprains to fatal falls. Authorities have pointed out for years that even marked trails in the Alps require alpine experience, sturdy hiking boots, and equipment suited to the elevation profile.

Investigation and autopsy ordered

Following the accident, the body of the 36-year-old was recovered and transferred to the forensic medicine department. The Innsbruck public prosecutor's office ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and to rule out any third-party fault. The police will not present the final report until the expert opinion is available.

Several media outlets, including BR24, picked up the incident on Thursday evening and in some cases reported the fall in sensationalist terms. The responsible authorities ask hikers to stick to the official trail markings and to turn back in good time in case of doubtful weather conditions or personal uncertainty.

Advice from mountain rescue to hikers

The German consular authorities were involved, as the victim is a citizen from the Sauerland. According to police, support for the relatives has been arranged. Further information about the man's identity is currently not being released out of respect for the protection of personal privacy.

Mountain rescuers from the Mayrhofen region are issuing increased warnings during the current summer season about the risks of changing weather and ground conditions. In particular after precipitation, seemingly solid rock can become a dangerous sliding surface, a mountain rescue spokesperson told BR24.

The Mayrhofen police station is conducting the investigation and asks any possible witnesses of the incident to come forward. As of this report's editorial deadline, no official final report from the authorities was yet available.
