A 77-year-old Viennese man died on Sunday afternoon in the sea off the northern Italian seaside resort of Grado, despite a swimming ban being in effect along the Friulian coast due to dangerous conditions.

Sequence of events

The emergency call was received shortly after 4:00 p.m. As reported on Monday by the Trieste newspaper "Il Piccolo," the man was in the water together with his 28-year-old granddaughter when both got into distress. While the young woman was pulled from the water by lifeguards, any help came too late for the 77-year-old.

According to Italian media reports, the elderly man was already unconscious in the water when rescue workers recovered him from the sea. He had suffered cardiac arrest. Despite immediately initiated resuscitation measures, the emergency crews were unable to revive the man. He died on the beach.
