Vienna, 27 August 2026
The Oslo, Norway-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) reported on Thursday that the Iranian judiciary has executed more than 500 people since 1 January 2026.
According to the organization, the number of documented executions in the first eight months of the year is already higher than in the entire previous year. The executions are taking place at an "unprecedented pace," IHR head Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam told the media. The group has been documenting death sentences in Iran for years and, according to its own account, relies on reports from Iranian state media as well as correspondents inside the country.
According to IHR research, the Iranian judiciary is increasingly making use of the death penalty for charges such as drug trafficking, corruption or "enmity against God" (moharebeh). Those affected are predominantly men, but at least one woman is also among those executed. Several executions were carried out publicly, reinforcing the message of intimidation.
