Background of the mass protests

Another death sentence has been carried out in Iran against one of the 14 men sentenced to death on charges of the brutal killing of four police officers during the unrest, following the mass protests in Iran.

According to the Iranian judiciary, the execution took place at Shahid Alichani Square, where the trial of the accused had been held. According to official figures, 14 men were sentenced to death for allegedly killing four police officers in a particularly brutal manner during the unrest. The execution of the latest verdict further increases the number of defendants already executed from these proceedings.

The mass protests had previously plunged Iran into one of the most severe domestic political crises of recent times. According to local media reports, the triggering event was the death of a young woman, which sparked outrage across the country. The protests quickly spread to numerous cities, including Isfahan and other urban centers, where security forces responded to demonstrators with what was at times massive violence. Human rights organizations repeatedly raised allegations that hundreds of people had been killed during the operations.
