Caracas, July 4, 2026

Roughly ten days after two severe earthquakes struck Venezuela's coast, rescue workers continue to recover bodies from the rubble, while thousands of people are considered missing and international helpers such as the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) have completed their work.

The two earthquakes on June 24 brought huge residential buildings crashing down and stripped tens of thousands of people — who already had very little — of everything. Bodies are still being pulled from the debris in Venezuela. Thousands of people are considered missing, as rescue workers struggle against massive destruction. This is shown in reports from a ZDF team that reached the capital Caracas after nearly three hours of travel from Valencia.

Miracles After Days: Rescues From the Rubble

Despite the extreme conditions, there are isolated signs of life. In Catia La Mar, a 43-year-old security guard was rescued. He survived eight days under the rubble, even though the chances of surviving after such a long time were very unlikely. Several days after the earthquakes, people are still being found alive in Venezuela. Among them is a three-year-old child.
