Analysis of Heat Exposure in Austrian Healthcare Facilities Underway

The results of the evaluation are to feed into further measures that the Ministry wants to coordinate together with the federal states, municipalities, and facility operators. The goal is a nationally uniform framework to better protect patients as well as residents of care facilities during heat periods.

Existing Measures and Funding Programs

At the same time, the Ministry points to already existing initiatives. In recent years, national heat protection plans have been published and funding programs for climate-fit conversions in healthcare facilities have been launched. The ongoing analysis is now intended to show where adjustments need to be tightened.

The Competence Center for Climate and Health is housed at the Ministry of Health and works closely with Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). It pools scientific findings on climate and health and prepares them for decision-makers.

Significance for Vulnerable Groups

From the Ministry's perspective, the topic is gaining additional significance due to demographic change. Older and chronically ill people, who frequently live in nursing and care facilities, are particularly sensitive to high temperatures. A better data basis is intended to help develop targeted protective measures.

The survey covers the entire federal territory and includes inpatient facilities as well as outpatient services. According to the Ministry, initial interim results are expected later this year, with a final report next year.

Next Steps and Timeline

The initiative is part of a broader program to adapt the healthcare system to climate change. This also includes training for medical staff, awareness campaigns for the public, and the strengthening of regional care structures that can respond quickly during heat waves.

Observers emphasize that reliable data is the foundation of any effective heat protection policy. Only once it is clear where which facilities are particularly at risk can measures be planned and implemented in a tailored manner.

The Ministry announced that it would publish the results of the analysis and enter into a structured dialogue with the affected facilities and the federal states on concrete improvements.
