Vienna, July 6, 2026
The Main Committee of the National Council passed the ordinance on Monday with the required two-thirds majority, extending Austria's strategic gas reserve, which was established in 2022, by two years until April 1, 2029.
A total of 240 million euros is earmarked for the measure in the 2027/2028 double budget. The strategic gas reserve comprises 20 terawatt-hours (TWh) and is intended to ensure supply security at short notice even during phases of strained international energy markets. According to the ordinance, the gas volume stored domestically corresponds roughly to the consumption of up to two winter months in a crisis situation.
According to data from the AGSI database of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), Austria's gas storage facilities are currently around 55 percent full. This corresponds to approximately 55.17 TWh. This puts Austria above the EU average: across the entire European Union, the storage fill level is around 50 percent, amounting to approximately 565.62 TWh, according to information from the report.
