The extension of Austria's gas reserve until 2029 is to be finalized on Monday in the Main Committee of the National Council, for which the government requires a two-thirds majority.

Economy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) issued an appeal on Sunday via press release to the opposition parties FPÖ and Greens to approve the extension of the strategic gas reserve. The vote in the Main Committee of the National Council is scheduled for Monday. According to the information available, a two-thirds majority is required for passage.

The Ministry put the total cost of the extension at 240 million euros. The strategic natural gas reserve comprises 20 terawatt-hours and, according to the Ministry, is sufficient for up to two winter months. It was introduced following Russia's attack on Ukraine in 2022.
