Bank Austria economist Walter Pudschedl attributes the recent decoupling of fuel prices from crude oil prices to rising refinery margins.
Walter Pudschedl, economist at Bank Austria, has analyzed the current development at the pumps and concludes that the recent fuel prices in Austria cannot be directly explained by the world market for crude oil. According to his analysis, the liter prices for gasoline and diesel in July could have been around ten cents lower without the increase in refinery margins.
Pudschedl quantifies the effect on overall inflation: If fuel prices had been lower by this amount, the inflation rate would have been reduced by more than 0.2 percentage points. This magnitude is relevant for monetary policy assessment, as the European Central Bank (ECB) has been monitoring inflation developments in the eurozone for some time and orients its key interest rates accordingly.
