Second fatal bathing accident within days

The fatal accident occurred just one day after the death of an eleven-year-old schoolgirl in a swimming pool in Sestri Levante in Liguria. The girl had become trapped there by her hair in a suction device of the pool and later died in hospital. The cluster of serious bathing accidents within just a few days has triggered a broad debate in Italy about the safety of pool facilities.

The mayor of Cervia, Mirko Boschetti, described the incident as a tragedy and expressed his condolences to the girl's relatives. Cervia is the neighboring municipality of Milano Marittima; the mayor said he was deeply saddened by the child's death. The municipality is supporting the relatives during the acute phase.

Italy responds with draft law

Against the backdrop of several fatal bathing accidents, the Italian government is pushing for the swift adoption of a law in parliament that provides for stricter safety regulations for public and private swimming pools. According to Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci, the draft law is currently being debated in parliament. The aim is to revise, in particular, the suction devices and supervision rules in hotel complexes.

The case illustrates a fundamental danger: children can end up in swimming pools unnoticed within seconds if adequate supervision is not ensured. In both current cases, according to initial findings, valuable minutes passed before outsiders became aware of the situation. The rescue chains at the respective facilities are being examined by investigators.

Investigations and family support

The exact circumstances of the tragedy in Milano Marittima are still the subject of investigations. Italian authorities are examining, among other things, whether the hotel complex's swimming pool was adequately secured at the time of the incident and whether rescue personnel were on site. The role of the hotel staff is also being included in the investigations.

The Austrian authorities were informed through consular channels, as the deceased child was an Austrian citizen. According to Italian reports, the family received psychological support. The identity of the girl was not made public by the authorities in order to protect the privacy of the relatives.
