Off the coast of the Vietnamese island of Phú Quốc, a speedboat carrying 32 tourists and four crew members capsized on Saturday, killing at least 15 Indian tourists, according to state media.

Course of the Accident

According to reports from the Vietnamese newspaper VnExpress, the accident occurred only about 400 meters from the shore of Phú Quốc, Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand. On board the boat, operated by a local organizer, were 32 tourists and four crew members; all went overboard, VnExpress reported, citing the authorities. No information was initially available regarding the nationalities of the remaining occupants beyond what had been confirmed.

According to state media, at least 15 Indian tourists died in the incident. Boats in the vicinity helped with the rescue operations. Many passengers were trapped inside the speedboat during the incident, the authorities reported. The exact circumstances that led to the capsizing of the boat remained the subject of ongoing investigations as of Saturday evening (local time).

Indian authorities confirmed the incident but initially did not comment on the number of deaths. The search for additional missing persons was ongoing as of Saturday evening, according to rescue services. The total number of people missing was not conclusively known at first.
