Vienna, 25 June 2026

Erste Bank, Raiffeisen Bank International, and three Raiffeisen regional banks are joining the European payment system Wero, which according to the European Payments Initiative (EPI) is to be available in Austria by early 2028.

With the entry of the Austrian major banks, the EPI gains a central lever to establish a foothold in another European market, according to its own statements. "With around 9 million inhabitants, Austria represents a strategic growth market for Wero and thereby supports the company's goal of building a leading pan-European payment solution," the EPI writes in its release. Erste Bank Oesterreich, RBI, and the three Raiffeisen regional banks will thus become shareholders of the initiative, which is currently backed by banks from several EU countries.
