Burgenland Introduces Truck Toll on Two State Roads for Vehicles Over 3.5 Tonnes

Chamber of Commerce criticizes additional costs

In the state parliament, the project will be the subject of debates in the coming weeks. The plenary vote is expected as early as summer, meaning the toll could come into force no earlier than autumn.

The amount of the fee and the technical implementation are still open. Both a vignette solution and an automatic route toll, as already exists on highways and expressways, are possible. A state spokesperson pointed out that they would like to orient themselves toward comparable regulations in other federal states.

It also remains open which additional routes could be added later. The focus is primarily on routes used by international transit traffic, where trucks roll through small towns. Residents there have been complaining for years about noise, vibrations, and pollution.

Residents and environmental groups see benefits

Citizens' initiatives and environmental organizations fundamentally welcome the move. They see it as a sign that the state intends to push back rerouted traffic away from the high-ranking road network. The state government argues that targeted pricing would help direct more freight transport onto highways and expressways.

The final legal review by the state's legal department is still ongoing. Only after that can the project result in a government bill, on which the state parliament will vote conclusively. The Chamber of Commerce announced its intention to continue participating in the process.
