A previously withheld expert report commissioned by the federal states recommends the introduction of a nationwide truck toll in Austria and quantifies its effects on traffic, the economy, and the climate.

According to documents released under the Freedom of Information Act, toll revenue was to be earmarked for road maintenance and public transport. The calculations also foresee a reduction of approximately two percent in truck kilometers driven. This is attributed mainly to fewer empty runs, better utilization of vehicles, and reduced diversionary traffic onto regional and municipal roads.

Fewer truck kilometers and more funding for infrastructure

For the construction industry, the study projects a production level 0.38 percent higher. The authors also assume a CO₂ reduction of more than 75 million tons across the entire network, provided the toll functions as designed. The authors emphasize that the funds should flow directly into infrastructure rehabilitation and public transport in order to reduce the existing maintenance backlog.
