Burning motorhome ignites patch of forest next to the A3 in the Rheingau-Taunus district

The fire brigade deployed with a large contingent to fight both the motorhome fire and the forest fire. Because of the heavy smoke and the extinguishing work, the A3 had to be temporarily closed, or at least severely restricted, in the affected section. According to the incident command, this resulted in a traffic jam several kilometres long that stretched over several hours.

Impact on traffic

No conclusive findings were initially available regarding the extent of the damage and the cause of the motorhome fire. Nor did the available information report any possible injuries. The police opened investigations into the cause of the fire, with a technical defect on the vehicle currently considered the most likely option.

According to initial reports, the firefighters were able to bring the flames in the patch of forest under control and prevent the fire from spreading to other wooded areas. Emergency services remained on site after extinguishing the fire to douse any remaining embers and rule out a flare-up.

Situation for residents

The closures on the A3 led to significant disruptions to commuter traffic on Wednesday morning. Commuters between the Rheingau-Taunus district and the greater Frankfurt area had to expect significant delays. Detours were set up but were only able to partially resolve the backlog.

Residents of the surrounding communities, including Niedernhausen and Idstein, were not endangered by the fire, according to the assessment of the emergency services. The official statements read verbatim: „Anwohner waren nicht gefährdet." The plume of smoke, however, drifted over wooded terrain and was visible from a distance.

How high the property damage to the motorhome and the affected patch of forest is was initially unclear. The vegetation over an area of several hundred square metres was damaged by the fire. Forestry authorities announced that they would inspect the affected area after the extinguishing work had ended.

Background: Fires at rest areas

Comparable fires at motorway parking areas have caused a stir in the region several times in the past. Parked vehicles – especially older motorhomes – repeatedly catch fire due to technical defects or overheated engines. In this context, the responsible authorities pointed to the importance of functioning fire extinguishers and regular maintenance.

Traffic on the A3 flowed largely normally again from late morning after the extinguishing work and the recovery of the wreckage had ended. Nevertheless, the emergency services expected minor disruptions due to clean-up work at the edge of the parking area. The investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
