Motorhome burns out completely on the A10 – driver and children escape in time

The man reacted swiftly, stopped the vehicle, and moved himself and his children out of the danger zone. Shortly afterward, the vacation vehicle was already "in Vollbrand," according to police. Initial findings indicated that no one was injured.

The volunteer fire department of Zederhaus responded to the scene with two vehicles and 18 emergency personnel and ultimately managed to extinguish the fire. The crews arrived quickly at the accident site after being alerted in order to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent vegetation or other vehicles.

Full closure and single-lane traffic

Due to the heavy smoke development, the Tauernautobahn had to be fully closed in both directions between 4:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Only after this complete closure could traffic be guided past the scene of the fire in a single lane.

The cleanup operations on the motorway took considerably longer than the actual firefighting. According to the emergency services, the recovery and cleaning work lasted until approximately 8:45 p.m.; only then could the stretch of road be fully reopened.

Location and significance of the Tauernautobahn

The A10 Tauernautobahn is one of Austria's most important north-south connections and runs, among other routes, through the Katschberg Tunnel. Even though the exact location of the fire this time was in the open air, the full closure and the subsequent single-lane traffic resulted in significant disruptions to holiday travel.

The federal highway B99 and surrounding country roads were used heavily as alternative routes during the closure phase. Local observers reported dense smoke hanging visibly over the valley for a considerable distance, drawing the attention of numerous passersby.
