Kiel, 08 July 2026

Canada is purchasing twelve conventional submarines of the Type 212 CD class from the German shipyard ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in Kiel, as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The order is considered one of Canada's largest defense investments in years. According to media reports, the sum for the submarines alone, including service, amounts to around 20 billion euros. Adding maintenance, operation, and spare parts over the coming decades, TKMS has previously indicated a total financial volume of around 62 billion euros.

According to company information, the first Canadian submarine is to be delivered in 2033. TKMS had previously announced that Canada intends to put the first new boats into service by 2035 at the latest. Each of the submarines is to operate with a crew of around 30 members.

Technology and Delivery Plans

According to the manufacturer, the Type 212 CD class submarines are among the most modern conventional submarines in the world. They are a further development of the combat-proven Type 212 A class. While the South Korean submarine of the KSS-III type is already in service, the first submarines of the roughly 74-meter-long Type 212 CD for Germany and Norway are still under construction.
