A billion-euro deal with symbolic weight
TKMS CEO Oliver Burkhard sees more than a classic arms deal in the arrangement. It is also a signal "toward Washington," he said. By choosing a European manufacturer, Canada is opting for greater independence from US defense procurement. The contract makes clear that allies with the same mindset can work together, Burkhard added.
Security expert Wolfgang Ischinger, head of the Munich Security Conference, also assesses the contract politically: "More resilience also means more industrial production for armaments in Europe." Awarding the contract to a German company shows that Europe is capable of providing strategic capabilities on its own. That is "symbolically very important" for transatlantic burden-sharing.
