Canada has chosen TKMS thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, based in Kiel, Germany, to construct its new fleet of submarines, according to Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail and German government sources.

The contract would be one of the most significant defence deals between Germany and Canada in decades. Citing informed circles, The Globe and Mail reported that Ottawa had settled on the German shipbuilder after a competitive evaluation. German officials confirmed the selection to domestic media on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara, describing the outcome as a strategic milestone.

"Das wäre ein sehr guter Startpunkt für eine strategische Zusammenarbeit," a German government source said, according to Deutschlandfunk. Officials added that a formal announcement in the context of the NATO summit "ein sehr gutes Signal" would send, signalling closer transatlantic defence industrial ties at a moment of renewed allied focus on maritime security.
