Key figures at a glance

In 2025, a total of 87,902 people died in Austria. As Manuela Lenk, the professional statistical director general of Statistics Austria, reported, the mortality rate declined significantly between 2015 and 2025. "Above all for cardiovascular diseases and cancer, fewer people died in relation to the population structure than ten years ago," said Lenk. The second major group of causes of death was cancer at 24.9 percent.

More than half of those who died – around 59 percent – were over 80 years old. Among those over 80, 41.2 percent of deaths were attributable to diseases of the circulatory system, while just over 17 percent were due to cancer. Around 39 percent of all deaths concerned the age group of 40- to 79-year-olds.
