In Carinthia, three of the four cyclists who died in road traffic in 2025 were aged 65 or older, according to the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ), citing data from Statistics Austria.
This corresponds to a share of 75 percent. This continues a trend that the VCÖ has observed for years: older people are disproportionately affected by fatal cycling accidents. In 2024, the share of seniors among fatally injured cyclists was as high as 80 percent according to the VCÖ, whereas in 2023 no cycling accidents with seniors as fatalities were recorded. Over the period from 2023 to 2025, seven seniors were killed, corresponding to a share of 64 percent of all fatal cycling accidents in this period.
