Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has appointed Carsten Linnemann, currently serving as CDU General Secretary, to become Germany's next Minister of Health, succeeding fellow CDU politician Nina Warken.

Background: From party office to cabinet

Linnemann, 48, confirmed the appointment in a video message posted from his office at the Konrad Adenauer House in Berlin. In the video, he said he needed time to settle into his new responsibilities. "Klar, ich bin auch ehrlich, ihr müsst mir ein bisschen Zeit geben," he told viewers. He also used the post to reflect on his time leading the party: "Jetzt melde ich mich nochmal aus dem Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, hier aus meinem, ja, super Büro," he said, describing his surroundings as he prepared to leave the role.
