Berlin, July 27, 2026

The CDU Federal Executive Board unanimously elected Hamburg member of the Bundestag Franziska Hoppermann as the new Secretary General of the CDU on July 27, 2026, thereby following the proposal of party leader Friedrich Merz.

The business graduate has represented the Hamburg-Wandsbek constituency in the Bundestag since 2021 and has been a member of the CDU since 1999. She previously served as the party's Federal Treasurer. Her appointment is seen as a signal: by choosing the 44-year-old, Merz aims to visibly strengthen the share of women in the CDU. For although a federal party convention in 2022 adopted a women's quota, women remain underrepresented both among the members and in the party's parliaments.
