Chilean customs authorities have discovered more than 100 tons of drugs in timber shipments bound for Europe, calling it a record seizure in the fight against organized crime.
Background: Smuggling via Bolivia
Hidden in timber shipments destined for Europe, investigators in Chile have seized more than 100 tons of drugs, primarily cocaine and ketamine. The seizure is a record find, the customs authority of the South American country announced on Monday in Santiago de Chile.
After a six-month investigation, authorities identified 45 containers arriving from Bolivia that contained the drug-laced timber. Had the cargo reached its destinations, the drugs would have been extracted in specialized laboratories using "highly sophisticated chemical processes," the customs authority explained.
