At the Baltic Sea port of Gdynia near Gdańsk, Polish police seized more than a ton of heroin with an estimated market value of 220 million zloty (51.8 million euros) and initiated criminal proceedings against two men and a woman from Poland.

Background of the discovery

According to reports, Polish investigators received a tip from British colleagues in March that a drug shipment from the United Arab Emirates was expected. Disguised as decorative bricks, the drugs were discovered in containers in Gdynia. As the news agency PAP reported, investigators believe it is the largest seizure of its kind in more than ten years.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński spoke to journalists of an extraordinary success by the security authorities. "Das ist die größte Operation dieser Art in mehr als zehn Jahren", said Kierwiński. Police described the seizure as the hardest blow against drug smugglers in recent years.
