Moussab Abou R., a former Syrian police chief convicted in absentia in Vienna in 2024 on charges including torture and sexual coercion, has reportedly been detained in Syria, according to Syrian state media cited by international outlets.

Moussab Abou R., who fled Austria before his trial, was convicted in absentia by the Vienna Regional Court (Landesgericht Wien) on charges that included torture, sexual coercion and grievous bodily harm. He had been living outside Austria since failing to comply with court orders related to the proceedings, and the conviction was never enforced on Austrian soil.
