Austria has seen a 25% increase in cycling accidents involving children, with 810 children injured in the past year, according to the mobility organization VCÖ.

The VCÖ reported that the number of children injured in road traffic accidents in Austria has risen by 15.7% in the past year, with a total of 3,559 children injured.

The organization attributed the rise in accidents to various factors, including narrow bike paths, gaps in the bike path network, and excessive traffic speeds.

Background

VCÖ expert Klara Maria Schenk stated that cycling is a popular activity among children and that it is essential to create a child-friendly traffic system to reduce the risk of accidents.

Schenk emphasized the need for more and sufficiently wide bike paths, more traffic calming, and clear intersections and road crossings to ensure the safety of children on the roads.
