According to a current analysis by the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) based on data from Statistik Austria, 40 out of 65 fatally injured cyclists in Austria last year were older than 65.

The share of the 65-plus generation among the fatalities was 62 percent — nearly three times as high as their share of all injured cyclists, which stood at 23 percent. A clear disparity emerges: older people are disproportionately likely to die in cycling accidents.

Disproportionate Impact

As VCÖ expert Klara Maria Schenk emphasized in a press release, with the growing number of older people, it is becoming increasingly important that the transport system be made senior-friendly.
