Anholt, 28 May 2026
The dead humpback whale that stranded on the Danish island of Anholt after a failed private rescue mission will be autopsied on site, the Danish environmental ministry announced on Thursday.
Autopsy Decision
The whale, widely known in Germany as 'Timmy' or 'Hope', repeatedly stranded along the Baltic Sea coast off Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania before a private initiative transported it by barge to the North Sea. Days after its release, authorities confirmed that a dead whale discovered off the Danish coast was the same animal.
Jane Hansen of the Danish environmental agency told the Tagesspiegel that circumstances around the stranded whale had changed significantly. 'We have therefore decided to recover the whale on Anholt and carry out the autopsy and scientific investigations on the island before disposal,' she said.
