A dead humpback whale that became the subject of a controversial private rescue mission has been recovered on the Danish island of Anholt, where a public necropsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The whale, referred to as 'Timmy' or 'Hope', was originally stranded off the Baltic Sea island of Poel. A private initiative led a rescue operation that towed the animal from the Baltic Sea across Danish waters into the North Sea. Days after its release, authorities confirmed that a dead whale found off the Danish coast was the same animal.

The carcass had been drifting in the water off the holiday island for more than two weeks. Danish authorities once attempted to pull the bloated whale into deeper water to bring it to a harbor, but the attempt failed. A recovery team finally pulled the carcass onto the beach using a rope, leaving a large furrow in the sand.
