Deutsche Telekom and Verdi Reach Wage Deal for 60,000 Workers After Marathon Talks

The union had originally demanded a 6.6 percent pay increase on a twelve-month contract, along with a Verdi member bonus of 660 euros per year. The final package delivers a different structure but secures multi-year gains.

Job Security and Member Bonuses

Job security was another key pillar of the deal. Operationally related dismissals are excluded for the entire duration of the collective agreement, providing a 33-month guarantee for the workforce.

For the first time, a Verdi member bonus was agreed. Collectively bargained employees who are Verdi members as of the reference date May 28, 2026 will receive a one-time payment of 440 euros this year.

If those same employees remain Verdi members at the end of 2028, they will receive an additional bonus of 220 euros, rewarding continued union membership.

Telekom HR board member Birgit Bohle described the agreement as a 'balanced conclusion' that sets 'a clear sign for stability and reliability' and secures a significant salary increase for employees.

Union and Management React

Verdi lead negotiator Frank Sauerland said: 'Mehr Geld, mehr Schutz, mehr Anerkennung, mehr Solidarität – das ist ein Vierklang, mit dem wir zentrale Ziele in dieser Tarifrunde erreichen konnten.'

Sauerland added: 'Ohne die starke Beteiligung der Beschäftigten an den Warnstreiks, Kundgebungen und Aktionen wäre das so nicht möglich gewesen.'

The bargaining round had seen several warning strikes called by the union, with employees participating in rallies and actions to press their demands. Both sides characterized the final outcome as a hard-won compromise.

The agreement now covers around 60,000 tariff employees of Deutsche Telekom nationwide, bringing labor peace to one of Germany's largest telecommunications employers for the next two and a half years.
